What 2G and 3G Actually Mean

A 2G class has two groups rotating through the room. A 3G class has three groups rotating through treadmill, rower, and floor at the same time. In practice, 2G usually means more treadmill time and longer floor blocks, while 3G usually means more rowing volume and shorter station segments.

Neither format is automatically harder. They just stress your body differently.

Why Some Members Prefer 2G

If you want more sustained treadmill work, more time to settle into the floor block, and fewer transitions, 2G often feels smoother. Endurance lovers, distance runners, and members training for the 1 Mile Run or 12-Minute Run often prefer 2G because there is more space to hold rhythm and practice base-to-push control.

It can also feel easier to learn as a newer member because there are fewer quick station changes.

Why Some Members Prefer 3G

If you like variety, shorter efforts, and more rowing, 3G can be a great fit. Members who get bored on long tread blocks often enjoy the faster pace. It is also a useful format if you want more repeated exposure to rowing mechanics, wattage, and stroke-rate control.

Studios also use 3G to fit bigger classes, so sometimes the best format is simply the one that works with your schedule.

How to Choose for Your Goals

Pick the format that best supports your current goal. Choose more 2G if you want to build running endurance, improve benchmark pacing, or spend more time lifting through longer floor blocks. Choose more 3G if you want extra rowing practice, a higher-variety class flow, or shorter work intervals that feel mentally fresher.

Burn Board's daily intel helps here. If the template is especially row-heavy or floor-heavy, you can decide whether that complements or duplicates the format you already booked.

Do Strength 50 and Tread 50 Replace Either One?

Not really. Strength 50 and Tread 50 are more specialized than 2G or 3G. They are not replacements for the standard class formats so much as tools you can layer in when you want extra focus.

Most members do best with a simple mix: standard OTF classes as the foundation, then Strength 50 or Tread 50 as a targeted add-on when training goals or schedule allow.
